The Italian Turnover

October 11, 2010 By Crumbs and Chaos

Spread the love

I am here once again with a FAMILY APPROVED MEAL…that includes a 5 year old, 3 1/2 year old and a 2 year old. I usually get some kind of negative feedback at most every evening meal, there are few meals that everyone is happy to eat…until this graced our dining table.

CALZONE: An Italian turnover that is filled with cheese, meats and/or veggies. Baked in the oven. Served with sauce for dipping and sometimes topped with garlic-infused olive oil.

What I love about this recipe…the dough is tender and easy to work with, honestly, if you’ve never made dough before this is a great place to start. It is also makes a great pizza if you need dough for that. This can be tailored to what your crowd likes, there’s room to be creative.

CALZONES

makes 2 large calzones

The Dough:
1 cup WARM WATER (about 110°)
1 pkg. ACTIVE DRY YEAST (which = 2 1/4 teaspoons if you are measuring from a jar)
1 Tablespoon SUGAR
2 Tablespoon OIL (I use Olive Oil)
1 teaspoon SALT
2 3/4 cups FLOUR

The Filling:
Anything you like on your pizza: pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, fresh garlic, spinach, olives, feta cheese….this list could go on and on
Shredded MOZZARELLA CHEESE (It’s super great if you buy a block and shred it yourself, it melts better)

2 Tablespoons MELTED BUTTER
2 cloves GARLIC, finely minced (optional)
2 teaspoons ITALIAN SEASONING (optional)
PIZZA SAUCE for dipping

Measure 1 cup of warm water, sprinkle yeast on top of water, stir to dissolve.

In a large bowl, combine sugar, oil, salt and flour. Pour in yeast and water. Mix together until smooth.

Knead on a floured surface about 5 minutes (or use your stand mixer for kneading.)

Cover with a kitchen towel and leave it alone for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 375°.

Using a knife, divide dough in half. Roll each half into a 10 inch circle.

On one side of each circle, place your topping ingredients and cheese. Make sure that you leave an edge to seal both sides together.

Fold over and pinch together to seal tightly. Transfer to a baking stone or lightly greased cookie sheet.

Bake for 15 minutes, brush with melted butter (I also added fresh garlic and Italian Seasoning). Continue baking for 10 more minutes or until golden brown.

This was after coming out of the oven, the one on the right just had pepperoni and cheese in it. The other was a little more adventurous – sausage, spinach, feta cheese, fresh garlic.

Slice and serve with pizza sauce for dipping.

DELICIOUS!

I made these for dinner tonight and my whole family loved them. This was my first time ever making dough from scratch. It was really easy and turned out great. Thanks so much for the recipe!
