Happy Birthday the Duplo Way!

August 18, 2011 By Crumbs and Chaos

Spread the love
Last week, we celebrated Jonah’s 3rd birthday!  It is an exciting age and I think it was the first time that he realized what his birthday actually meant.  When trying to decided on a theme I went around and around with a few of his favorite things.  We thought about trains or Cat and the Hat or Toy Story.  But in the end we decided to do a Duplo party!

Here’s what we did…
Invitations
In the past I have handmade invitations, this year I decided to go the easier route and print photo invites.  First I made a duplo ‘wall’ and cut out letters that said “Jonah’s Turning 3!!!” Then I took a picture of it and created an invite at walmart.com.  It was easy and fast!
Decorations
We were lucky enough to have nice weather for an outdoor party so there weren’t many decorations.  We set all of our duplos and duplo table out in the driveway for the kids to play with.  I also made a box of duplos that held crayons for the kids to color with.  Then I made sure everything from the table cloths to the spoons and forks were in primary colors.
Food
Again, we went simple!  We ordered pizza and had pasta salad and watermelon.  It was the perfect outdoor food with minimal preparation and cleanup.  For the kids, I bought juice boxes and covered them in primary colored cardstock.  Then I punched circles out and taped them so they looked like a duplo.

Cake
I had seen a few cakes online, some frosted and some with fondant.  I didn’t like the look of the frosted ones but didn’t know if I wanted to tackle fondant for the first time.  In the end I did use marshmallow fondant and it was much easier than I anticipated.  It wasn’t perfect but for a first try I was very proud of the outcome. Here’s the recipe that I used.

Ingredients
1 – 16 oz bag regular or miniature marshmallows
1 – 2 lb bag confectioner’s sugar
2 Tablespoons water
2 teaspoons vanilla
Shortening

Directions
Grease a glass bowl and a mixing bowl.  Place water, marshmallows, and vanilla in the glass bowl.  Microwave on high for 60 seconds.  Stir, and if not completely melted microwave for another 30 seconds.  (If you want to color it, add the color to the melted marshmallows.  I used wilton icing coloring in royal blue.)  Meanwhile, sift half the bag of powdered sugar in the mixing bowl.  Pour the melted marshmallows on top of it and stir until incorporated.  Then add the rest of the powdered sugar.

When mixed, place on greased saran wrap.  Wrap and place in an airtight container.  Allow no air to get to it.  Let it set until cool.  When ready to use, grease the table.  Then roll it out.  Making sure the rolling pin and table are VERY well greased.  Roll it until it is 1/16th of an inch thick.  Carefully lift and place on frosted cake.  Smooth over and down the edges.  Cut off at base.

Awesome blog, chicka! I’m digging your duplo party! Very creative. It reminds me of when my girls were babies- 13-15 years ago and a baby wipe brand carried wipes in containers that looked like large lego blocks. We would store crayons, toys, blocks in them.

How did you get that great blue??? I love the home-made fondant – used it for the first time last year, to cover donut holes & make “ghosts” for my youngest’s Halloween party at school! Now that’s a great snack – the kids loved them. Anyway, your Duplos turned out great and I’m sure your son enjoyed the party! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Emily,
I used the Wilton Icing Coloring in Royal Blue. It made the exact blue I wanted and left everyone’s tongue BLUE!! Which the kids all thought was REALLY fun!
