{Baked} Caramel Apple Donuts

September 26, 2012 By Megan@CrumbsandChaos

Spread the love
There isn’t anything about the caramel apple combo that I don’t love!  I have always been a huge fan of apple cider, and when I discovered the Caramel Apple Spice at Starbucks it was love at first sip.  All throughout college it was the thing that kept my hands and stomach warm on the cold Chicago days!  Since then I have of course found an endless list of treats using this winning pair.  I love the Caramel Apple Dip, Caramel Apple Crisp, and the Mini Caramel Apple Fruit Pizzas to name a few.

Last week when searching donuts on pinterest I came across the idea of Caramel Apple Donuts.  They were baked and not fried, definite plus. And I found a caramel topping made from real caramels, not just a caramel glaze, again a major plus in my book.  I thought the original recipe didn’t have quite enough liquid so I add a bit but otherwise they were wonderful, especially while they were still warm and dripping with caramel!

{Baked} Caramel Apple Donuts

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups FLOUR
  • 1 3/4 teaspoon BAKING POWDER
  • 1/4 cup SUGAR
  • 1/4 cup BROWN SUGAR
  • 1/2 teaspoon SALT
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated NUTMEG
  • 1/3 cup BUTTER, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1 EGG
  • 1/3 cup MILK
  • 1 1/2 cups APPLES, peeled, cored, and grated
  • 1 1/2 cups CARAMELS, I used the Caramel Bits but you could also unwrap the candies
  • 1 Tablespoon WHOLE MILK

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl whisk flour, baking powder, sugars, salt and nutmeg. Add butter and work in with a knife to incorporate. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the milk. Combine with grated apples. Add egg mixture to flour mixture and stir without over doing it. Pipe batter into greased donut pan about 3/4 full. Bake for 15 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl and heat on high for 1 minute. Then stir. Continue heating in 30 second intervals, stirring between each time until smooth and creamy. Dip the top of the donuts in the caramel to frost. ENJOY!
