DIY- Homemade Play Doh

September 21, 2011 By Crumbs and Chaos

Spread the love
It’s Play Doh Time!!!

My kids love to play with Play Doh.  It can be such a mess, but, they will sit there and play with it for hours.  My oldest daughter recently started Pre-School and we made this play dough for her to take to school.  My kids really enjoyed making it and I loved that it smelled way better than real play doh.
Kool-Aid Play Dough
3- 3 1/2 Cups flour
1 Tablespoon alum (I found this in the spices/seasonings aisle at the grocery store)
3 Tablespoons cooking oil
1/2 Cup salt
2 packages dry kool-aid (unsweetened) (Whatever color you pick will be the color of your play dough)
2 cups boiling water
Mix dry ingredients together.  Then mix oil and water together.  Combine both dry and liquid ingredients. Knead until smooth.  Before putting play dough in an air tight container (Ziplocs work great) make sure it is cooled thoroughly.  Store the play dough in the refrigerator.
I found while making this, if you knead the play dough right away after the boiling water goes in, your hands will turn the color of the kool-aid.  So, we just mixed ours with a spatula until it cooled a little bit and then when you knead it your hands won’t be dyed!
The longer you knead it, the smoother it becomes!

I haven’t seen a recipe for play doh with alum before. I love the vibrant blue from the kool aid. This is great!

This is a great recipe! We’ve tried peanut butter play doh (which was super easy to make) but I havent been able to find a kool aid recipe. I have all the ingredients so we will try this tomorrow 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
