An iconic part of February 14th is a little box of small heart-shaped candies called Sweethearts. Made by Necco, they are known for their sayings, such as “Be Mine” “Love You” “Sweet” “Call Me” “Miss You.” Necco produces them all year long, in fact 100,000 pounds of hearts are made per day – 8 billion Sweethearts are sold each year over about a six week time span.
Wow…that’s a lot of sweet, little pastel hearts!
And, no I don’t have a recipe to make your own, although I did see one this afternoon. I have a bit of decor for you today. A simple project should you be snowed in, as many around the country will be over the next few days.
Here’s what you should know…I didn’t use traditional conversation heart colors for this – I like bright and bold better – use whatever you prefer. I made this project personal by printing a picture of the kids off of my computer. This can be made by kids, but their age and ability level will determine which parts of it they can do.
This is an easy craft that you can use for decoration at your own house or add a sentimental touch and give as a gift.
Supplies Needed:
Cardboard
Construction Paper or Foam Sheets (from the craft department)
Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter (optional)
Markers
Scotch Tape
Scissors
Valentine Wrapping Paper (found this in the $1 spot at Target)
Ribbon
Trace a dinner plate on the cardboard. Cut the circle out using scissors. Cover the cardboard circle in wrapping paper, secure with tape.
Using the heart shaped cookie cutter (if you have one) trace 12 hearts on the foam sheets or construction paper. Cut them out.
With a marker, write conversation sayings on the hearts. Arrange around the edge of the circle, after you have them laid out secure them with tape.
Attach ribbon to the back to hang it.
If desired, attach a picture of your favorite sweethearts. I used the phrase ‘Sweet as Candy’ – yes I’m partial, but I thought it was appropriate.
