Lunch is a very important part of the day for your child especially when they are in school. They need essential nutrients to keep them going through the rest of the day. Here are some great tips and recipes when packing your child’s lunch.
Tips:
– Include whole grains such as whole wheat bread or tortillas.
– Include fresh fruit and veggies. Make them fun and add a little dip if needed to get your child to eat them.
– String Cheese is a great source of calcium. It is easy to pack in their lunch.
– Avoid sugary drinks and encourage them to drink water (add lemon or lime to change up the taste) or milk.
Recipes:
A friend of mine mentioned that her daughter had been enjoying sushi (without raw fish) with them and it got me thinking you could make “sushi” for your child’s lunch.
PB&J Sushi
Remove crust from bread, flatten slightly with a rolling pin. Spread entire piece with peanut butter and add a layer of jelly in the middle. Gently roll and slice into little pieces as shown in picture. Enjoy!
Ham & Veggie Sushi
Use whole wheat tortilla. Spread layer of garden vegetable cream cheese on tortilla. In the middle of tortilla add layer of ham and green peppers. Roll and slice into bite size pieces. Enjoy!
Lunch Kabobs
I also recently saw this idea in our local grocery store magazine.
Use stick pretzels and your choice of ingredients. I used colby jack cheese, ham, and added tomatoes to some. I found it easiest if I made a small whole first before poking the pretzel through, then the cheese tended to break less.
Finding fun ways to incorporate healthy food into your child’s diet makes eat it even more fun.

Great ideas! I’m always trying to think of ways to change up my girls school lunches. They get so bored with the same ol’ PB & J sandwiches I make them.

Those are so cute – my girls love things that are rolled up – and they actually like Sushi so I am sure they would feel cool eating these at school.
